They say couples who play together, stay together, and when that includes fitness, there’s the added bonus of staying fit together. Regardless of your individual fitness levels, there are plenty of options for activities and workouts you can do with your partner. Even if it’s just one day a week, training with your significant other can be a great way to spend time together and to help each other live a healthy, fit life.

Having your spouse or significant other as a workout buddy is awesome, I can attest.  Not only do Casey and I have fun training together, but it’s easier to fit in workouts in when your spouse on the same page. And when one of us is feeling unmotivated, the other can usually talk them into training – sometimes with a little friendly badgering (let’s face it, no guy wants to be out-worked by his preggo wife). Since Casey is a much better athlete than I am, he pushes me to be better. And bonus for the guys – training with a woman increases your testosterone levels.

It’s Valentine’s Day – but before you go out for that fancy dinner date, grab your guy or gal and try one of these couples workouts.

Workout #1
This workout is a switch-off workout with your partner.  The great thing about this is it works with two different fitness levels.  The faster runner will allow for the slower runner to have less time doing the exercises, creating a challenging workout for both.

Partner 1) Run 400 Meters
Partner 2) Air squats until Partner 1 completes the run, switch.

Jaime and her boyfriend, David, rock the fit life together. Here they are demonstrating how to do Russian Twists with a partner.

50 Sit-Ups (toes together,  meet each other at the top of the movement and pass the medicine ball back and forth).

10 Push-Ups (alternate wide-grip push-ups with medicine ball push-ups – passing the med ball back and forth, 1 count includes both push-ups).

50 Russian Twists (sit back to back and pass the med ball).

10 Squat/Burpee Combos (partner with med ball does two squats while other partner does a burpee, pass the ball and switch, count the burpees for the reps)

Rest, repeat 2-3 times.

Workout #3
This workout is great for a couple that has varying levels of fitness and is completed one after the other, so one partner can help the other if needed.

5 pull-ups (partner can assist)
5 squat jumps or speed squats
5 push-ups
5 box jumps

Switch back and forth with your partner for a total of 10-15 rounds.
